The Showcase Studio

Gasworks Arts Park is three kilometres from the Melbourne GPO, situated in Albert Park. It is an arts precinct housed in renovated industrial buildings on what was the site of the South Melbourne gas production plant. The Park is a leash-free dog exercise area, and includes a children’s playground, picnic tables, barbeques and the Gasworks Cafe.
The facilities include 2 theatres, community access workshop spaces, two galleries and a café. The precinct already has 14 studio artists in residence, covering the disciplines of Visual Arts, Sculpture and Ceramics. Gasworks artistic policy is founded on inclusion and ownership by the local community.
The Showcase Studio is situated on the quadrangle that unites the Gasworks Café with reception, the theatres and galleries. The studio is also visible to the main reception and the theatre box office. Due to this highly visible location, the Showcase Studio also serves as a portal into the creative activities and output of the other resident artists.

Features of the studio include:

– Based in the centre of a vibrant, established arts community
– A secure, standalone building, with 24hour access
– Some built in benches, shelves and a large sink with hot and cold water
– Concrete floor
– Good overhead lighting, lots of natural light and internal window furnishings
– Ample free parking around the park
– Onsite cafe

The studio is available from July 1st and there is a 3 month probationary period.

Artist Requirements

We are seeking an artist who creates small works of art or craft, and would like to develop more public awareness about their work.

A key selection criteria for becoming part of the Gasworks Artist community is the willingness to contribute to Gasworks’ public engagement program. The public engagement requirement for the Showcase Studio is that it be open to the public for part of the day for 3 or 4 days per week. The studio will display a limited number of small, bespoke artworks from the other resident artists, as well as their own work.

The resident artist in this studio will be expected to assist with public enquires and artwork sales when the studio is open. In exchange for this agreed activity; the rental rate for this space will be heavily subsidized and the activity in the Showcase Studio will be promoted by our Marketing department via social media and our monthly enews.
