The 4th Wall presents... ReWorks: Altered Music Theatre
Boasting songs from a diverse range of musicals including Wicked, West Side Story, Les Miserables and Rent, this is a show for musical theatre lovers who crave a little variation. ReWorks takes classic musical theatre pieces and twists them so the songs are not as instantly recognisable - whether it’s turning the well known ballad “Memory” from Cats into a sassy jazz trio or Rent’s rocking “One Song Glory” into an operatic masterpiece.
This is not your average cabaret.
Featuring Ruth Bishop, Sally McKenzie, and Angela Lumicisi.
Six misanthropic performers share songwriter Rob McDowell’s original music in a theatrical setting, resting somewhere between Brechtian cabaret, Bowie, Bacharach and gothic melodrama. The songs of The Great Depression, taken from Plastic Palace Alice’s recent album, suggest a non-linear, dreamlike journey through a society in decline: the fantasy of a mind seeking to escape the weight of expectation and the pain of loss. It’s a macabre and romantic voyage, evocative of all that was splendid in the last century.
Plastic Palace Alice is a perversely literate local rock band - pirates of the high arts and musical genres. This special performance sees them step out of their usual guise in order to showcase the theatricality of their songs and style, side by side with the string quartet that helped record the album.
"...lush, dense...stunning, theatrical...It's a thrilling beginning for these guys - full of creative savvy and hopeful hearts - and I wish there were more bands in the country that sounded so sincere." - Beat Magazine
From the misty mountains of Snowmanlandia comes the legend of The Caravan of Love - and for one night only they present to you a freak show of irrational theatre, exotic characters, elaborate costumes, and tongue-in-cheek cheek. Their ages are ambiguous, their histories are unknown, but they have gained a reputation as an authentic and innovative burlesque group whose work provides an untamed response against an increasingly conservative society.
Finally they have arrived at Gasworks with a probing and comical look at the cultural significance of the humble shoe. It’s absurd, it’s satirical… but it’s definitely not art.
