The Fringe @ Gasworks program has now drawn to a close.

On Sunday 15 October 2006, Gasworks Arts Park was presented with the the Best Venue award at the Melbourne Fringe Festival awards night. The Dance/Movement Award was presented to Fringe @ Gasworks presentation In The Town of Sleepy Hollow by Melenie Crowe Dance Company.

Fringe @ Gasworks featured theatre; dance, circus, kids’ performance, readings, a poetry slam, new short works, photography, a symposium on public art, forums and debate, and workshops in professional development for artists, performance writing and crime writing. As an important hub of activity for the Melbourne Fringe Festival, Gasworks also hosted a busy bar and gathering place at its Gasbar and Gasworks Café. With affordable ticket prices and programming to attract all ages and interests, Gasworks Arts Park is always an ideal place to sample the Fringe Festival.

Box-a-Shorts
Written by Frank Otis, Vanessa de Largie, Amedeo Astorino and Sharon Wright. Four writers with four very similar themes but very different plays. Defector Art Theatre’s latest production pushes both buttons and boundaries.

Caravan
Throw Down, an independent circus collective, presents their new show Caravan, work about life in a suitcase. Combining high-energy circus skill, humour, heartbreak, eccentricity and danger, Caravan is a fresh look at facing one’s deepest desires.

Chasing Pegasus (a play in ten chords)
Incognita Enterprises’ Chasing Pegasus (a play in ten chords) focuses on the continuing quest of humankind to become more than the sum of our parts. It is a celebration of what makes us different, and the same.

Contention or Consensus Symposium
Contention or Consensus will stimulate debate around the following questions: How can public art articulate and support a sense of possibility in social and political thinking? Where does socially engaged public art activity stand within current debates around contemporary arts practice? Presented by Gasworks Arts Park and RMIT University.

Democratic Republic of Congo: Forgotten War
An exhibition of images by photographers Ron Haviv, Gary Knight, James Nachtwey, Antonin Kratochvil and Joachim Ladefoged, who travelled to DRC with Médecins Sans Frontières. Principal sponsor: Nursing Agency Australia, Artistic Partner: Brisbane Powerhouse, Transport Partner: Air Road.

In the Town of Sleepy Hollow

Welcome to the town of Sleepy Hollow, where a constable loves a daughter, a headless horseman loves a good kill, a stepmother is seduced by witches, and a boy suffers a traumatic loss…or so we think. Combining theatre and contemporary dance, this piece explores three variations of the story.

The story of Marj, a middle-class middle-aged housewife with a secret. As portraits of some of history’s most significant women tell their stories, Marj finds a powerful force for change. Marj’s Torchbearers honours the legacy of some of history’s great women.

Scraping The Surface
Written by Lyle Victor Albert. Direct from Canada, Scraping the Surface is an autobiographical one-man show by playwright/performer with cerebral palsy Lyle Victor Albert. It is an hilarious personal account of the challenges and victories of stepping into adulthood, presented as an Art of Difference 2006 event.

The Pharmacist
