Contamination

Contamination

Contamination is an exhibition featuring sculpture, installation, ceramics, painting and illustration responding to Gasworks Arts Park’s contaminated environment and its planned remediation.

Gasworks' fourteen professional resident artists and curator Richard Thomas will each create a new artwork in reaction to the poisoned land on which they work.

A mixed-media exhibition featuring site-specific installation, sculpture, ceramics, painting and illustration, Contamination features the work of Gasworks’ internationally renowned artists including Lisa Roet (winner, Contemporary Sculpture Award 2005 and National Sculpture Prize 2003), Matthew Harding, Kris Coad and multi-award winning illustrator Ann James.  The exhibition will take place in the Gasworks Theatre, where its darkness and theatrical lighting form an integral part of the exhibition, and will also feature some iinstallations outdoors in the park.

Gas Works to Gasworks

Gas Works to Gasworks is an exhibition which will hang concurrently with Contamination, in the theatre foyer.

The exhibition includes a collection of photographs, maps and plans that show us the changing landscape of the Gasworks site.  Stunning aerial photographs give us an insight into the Gas Works as a thriving industry.  Explosions, natural gas discoveries and changing times caused the Gas Works to shut down its furnace and close its doors. The land with its buildings sat crumbling until a way to use this site was created as Gasworks Arts Park, but the Gas Works left its mark on the land, contaminating the soil.

A Contamination Management Plan has subsequently been put into place by the City of Port Phillip.   Now once again a thriving industry sits on the Gasworks Arts Park site, including theatre shows, exhibitions, a café, resident artists, Books Illustrated, dogs and their owners.
