Gasworks Arts Park presents

Gasworks Circus Showdown

Following two brilliant Heats we are delighted to announce the four finalists for Gasworks Circus Showdown 2019, to be held in the Gasworks Theatre this Saturday 11 May at 7.30pm

The finalists are:
D-humania: Code Grey
Borderline: Borderline
Silken Silhouette: A Broken Smile
Jack Wilde & Shona Conacher: Jack Wildes Big Glittery SH!TSHOW

Featuring four of the best new and emerging circus and physical theatre acts, this finale is set to be nail-bitingly close.

Circus Showdown is the premiere professional development showcase for circus and physical theatre artists.

The only performance opportunity of its kind in Australia, Gasworks Circus Showdown invites artists from across Australia to present 10-15 minute solo, duo or group acts in a professional venue under the guidance of experienced circus professionals.

Two heats culminate in a final showcase that brings the most advanced artists together, where an overall winner will be awarded a series of career development opportunities. Previous finalists have used Gasworks Circus Showdown as a springboard to develop new works which have been performed nationally and internationally.

HEAT 1

Abort Acro presents Riches to Rags
Five young people leave different homes, soon falling into homelessness. Their only outlet and hope: circus. These street kids find family, love and unity amongst themselves in the dark city.

Borderline Presents Borderline
Borderline is an acrobatic trio that prove that gravity is just an inconvenience. Pushing their bodies and your imagination to the limit, one daredevil skill at a time.

Silken Silhouette presents A Broken Smile
‘Grin and bear it’ ‘just smile through the pain’ phrases we are all told from when we are young, but how much damage are they doing? A Broken Smile explores the affects of smiling as a defense mechanism and the reality of being a young woman in today’s society. Through circus, dance and physical theatre we follow the experiences of a young girl and explore the difficulties faced within day to day life.

HEAT 2

D-humania presents Code Grey
In a world where mental health becomes physical, translated through movement and circus, follow four individuals who join forces to overcome their illnesses together. A mix of dark themes and experimental circus are used to find a glimmer of hope in this dark world.

Jacinda Patty/Three Feet present Safety Banana
Safety Banana is a one woman show that will take you on a journey to the realisation that “it’s OK to be you”. Be immersed in a playful, powerful and hilarious world where being confident, single and yourself is OK.
Safety Banana was created from the realisation that society is placing women on the shelf and giving us a use by date. In a world where stability is often traded for adventure, Jacinda says “I want it all”.

Avan Whaite presents Somehow Sapien
Are you a good person? Am I? And if we were bad people would we think we weren’t? Would we be capable of change? Somehow Sapien is a new work from interdisciplinary artist Avan Whaite, who uses circus and absurd scenarios to address these questions…somehow

Jack Wilde & Shona Conacher present Jack Wilde’s Big Glittery SH!TSHOW
“Jack Wilde’s BIG Glittery SH*T-SHOW” is a high-energy, hilarious, jaw dropping circus spectacle from the minds of Jack Wilde and Shona Conacher, that can barely be contained. A brief glimpse into a sequin-filled full show still under development, this *slightly* NSFW show starts strong and only gets higher, further, faster, and furrier. *Audience members with pacemakers are advised to bring extra batteries.
