Gasworks Arts Park Presents
By a Thread
Long spools of white rope run through pulley sheaves and wrap around bodies, connecting the artists’ movements together both on and above the ground. Like the boom and sheets of a sailing ship, the performers are hoisted and swung by one another, as if weightless. The actions of one acrobat affect and implicate the movements of others in a precise negotiation of cause and effect.
The rope is a physical manifestation of the trust implicit in any relationship, acrobatic or otherwise. The performers use this metaphor to explore the give and take, the balance, and the risk, of trusting each other. Leaving behind the realm of the solo act where a performer relies on their individual strength, in By A Thread the strength of the group combines to hold up the collective, keeping them suspended in mid-air.
One Fell Swoop is made up of seven emerging circus artists from Melbourne’s NICA (National Institute of Circus Arts). They are amongst the most exciting upcoming circus performers in Australia. By a Thread is conceived and created entirely by the ensemble, with the Gasworks theatre in mind.
The group pushes the boundaries of what seems possible… If you want to see a group of exceptional humans pushing the limits of their art, this show is definitely for you. An audience member sitting near me summed it up best at the end of the show when she said “I want to watch it again”. ★★★★1/2 – The West Australian
In a spectacular display of strength, performance art and a whole lot of trust, the group from By A Thread blew the room away with their innovative and damn brilliant show.. ★★★★1/2 – The Music.com.au
