Dynamic Principles: Manifesting Fields of Tension

“Our hearts beat and we breathe in rhythms, we feel, we yearn, we fear – and we might think of these aspects of our lives in more or less conscious and pragmatic ways. Yet what if we were aware of our emotions as attractive forces, to better understand ourselves?”

Resident sculptor at Gasworks for the past seven years, and 2018 winner of the ‘From Nature’ Jury Award with collaborator Oliver Ashworth-Martin, Ben Storch’s practice revolves around dynamic principles inspired by orbital motions.

Since completing his PhD on the creation of surfaces of negative, hyperbolic curvature in sheet metal, Ben’s search for form has generally manifested in static sculptures. However it is from principles of motion – rarely witnessed, but all around us – that his elegant, floating, curvaceous forms are actually derived. For a more immersive experience of dynamic force fields, Ben has been exploring virtual reality (VR) as a creative, interactive medium and will share these developments with you.
