Gasworks Arts Park Presents

Bakersfield Mist

Starring Australian acting legends John Wood and Julie Nihill and based on a true story, Bakersfield Mist is a hilarious collision of cultures and class attitudes that goes beyond the subject of painting to be an exploration of the nature of authenticity in art and in life.

Maude, a fifty-something unemployed bartender, has bought a painting for a few bucks from an op shop. Despite almost trashing it, she now thinks it’s a Jackson Pollock worth millions. In fact, she’s certain it is. But when world-class art expert, Lionel Percy, flies over from New York and arrives at her trailer park home in Bakersfield to authenticate the painting, he really has no idea what he’s about to discover.

Bakersfield Mist was first presented on stage in the United Kingdom by Sonia Friedman Productions, Nica Burns, Martin Massman, Kelbe Bensinger, Darren Baggert and Chris Bensinger. The World Premiere of Bakersfield Mist was produced at The Fountain Theatre, Los Angeles, directed by Stephen Sachs.

This play is brought to Gasworks Arts Park by the Tasmanian Theatre Company and Straightjacket Productions.

“Inspired by true events, this sparkling and colourful new comedy-drama asks vital questions about what makes art and people truly authentic”– The Telegraph

“A thoroughly entertaining 85 minutes of quipping, arguing, boozing, opining, fist-fighting and soul-baring”– The Times
Please note these quotes pertain to the international productions of Bakersfield Mist.
