Resident Artist Program

The precinct has 16 studio artists in residence, covering the disciplines of Visual Arts, Sculpture, Ceramics and Jewellery.

Gasworks studios are available for two year terms that can be renewed at the discretion of management subject to satisfactory performance of collaborative public access projects to benefit the community. Vacancies will be advertised on the Gasworks website with application forms to complete, followed by an interview. Gasworks requires artists to use the space for the majority of their working week and artists are also required to attend organised meetings with management.

Expressions of Interest

Artists must be prepared to contribute 30 voluntary hours per year to Gasworks’ public engagement program which includes, but is not limited to, studio open days, studio tours, educational talks, fundraising activities and events, classes, workshops and exhibitions.

Part of the Key Selection Criteria will be based on the applicants’ ability to:

  • contribute to park activities
  • collaborate on projects with other resident artists
  • conduct talks and workshops with members of the public
  • present and explain work, equipment and processes to studio visitors
  • background and profile as a practicing artist

Preference will be given to artists based in the City of Port Phillip. Expressions of interest for studio consideration will be placed on a register. You can email your contact details to the Visual Arts Manager; please include your preferred studio discipline (i.e.; Sculpture, Visual Arts, Ceramics).

Gasworks is a not-for-profit arts centre located in Albert Park just three kilometres from the CBD, 300 metres from the beach and 400 metres to shops, cafes and the No. 1 tram on Victoria Avenue. Gasworks currently has 15 Studios, two theatres, two gallery spaces, a cafe, function and workshop spaces. The venue presents an annual program of festivals and events, including a monthly Farmers Market and a children’s school holiday program.

The studio is situated in a heritage building on the perimeter of the park and is a self-contained space of approx. 60sqm. The space is available for artists across all disciplines; including visual artists, writers, theatre companies, and artistic groups from the social justice and inclusion sectors.
Features of the studio include:
Based in the centre of a vibrant, established arts community.
A secure, stand alone building, with 24 hour access.
Some built in benches, shelves and a large sink with hot and cold water.
Concrete floors.
Good overhead lighting and lots of natural light.
Access to exhibition facilities and other facilities of Gasworks Arts Park.
Conditions that may be suitable for a creative partnership (photographers, writers etc).
Ample free parking around the park.
On-site cafe.
We are seeking artists who can contribute to Gasworks’ public engagement program which includes, but is not limited to, studio open days, studio tours, educational talks, and school holiday workshops.

The studio is available from January 1 and has a pcm rental of $821; which includes GST, power, gas and waste removal. There is a Bond of $350 and a 6-month probationary period. $821 inc. GST.

Applications must be received by January 6, 2020 and interviews will be arranged from Monday, January 12, 2020.
